SSTV : SLOW SCAN TELEVISION
language -> image -> noise -> signal -> noise -> image -> language

A translation of my dissertation on dictating nonverbal communication // 'understanding noise/signal' // electricity pylons as communicators into broadcastable radio signal

SSTV (slow scan television) is a method used to transmit images via radio through a process of encoding signals into audio notably used by astronauts. It is by no means a "pure" transmission as any external noise will be picked up and in turn translated into visual interference.

What I learnt from running the image multiple times is really self explanatory, if there is any interference to the signal (E.G. background noise or a muffling of the microphone), that noise is transmitted visually with the decoded image as an interruption. It’s why messages from space are scrambled in bad weather.

NAME A STAR: [JANUARY SUN]

WHILST RESEARCHING AN ELECTRICITY PYLON I GOT STUCK ON HOW TO ADDRESS IT. HONOUR TITLES, A FORMALITY I DON’T CARE FOR UNLESS IT’S NON HUMAN. I CONTACTED THE NATIONAL GRID ASKING IF THERE WAS A NAME OR SOME KIND OF CODE OR INDICATOR (MANY SHOULD HAVE A TYPE OF SERIAL BUT ARE OFTEN NOT VISIBLE WITHIN PUBLIC REACH) - NOT SURE WHAT PUT THEM OFF BUT I NEVER GOT A REPLY.

WHATS IN A NAME EXCEPT FOR INFRASTRUCTURE- DESIGNED TO GRIN AND BARE IT, WE ASK FOR THEIR STATIC. THEY PAY FAR MORE ATTENTION THAN I COULD EVER MANAGE. A STRANGE WHIRRING MEDITATION, A LOW LISTENING huUMMMMMMMrrnMMMMMMMMMMMMMMnnnnnMMMMMMmmMMmmmmmmmmmmmmmrrrrnnnnnnnnnrrnrnnnnnnmmmmmmmmrrrrrrrrrrrrmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

THERES A RADIO TOWER NOT FAR FROM MY ESTATE, I THINK OF HER, BUTCH FACING THE COLD, JANUARY SUN. TOWER #9121284114 (OPEN STREET MAP) TOWER/MAST (OPEN INFRASTRUCTURE MAP)

RADIOS FROM CARS NEARBY ECHO TWICE;
ONCE [THROUGH THE VALLEY-SPACES-BETWEEN CONCRETE AND SOMETHING ELSE AND CONCRETE AGAIN]
AND TWICE [BACK ONTO IT]

IF I CAN HEAR IT AT HER FEET- SHE CAN FEEL IT CARRIED ON THE WINDS SHAKING HER FRAME. I WONDER IF THERE IS RECOGNITION - BESIDES CONSCIOUSNESS, INTELLIGENCE OR PERSONIFICATION - DOES THE FEEDBACK FEEL LIKE HOME? CAN THERE BE COMFORT IN A MACHINE FOR FEELING ITSELF SUNG BACKWARDS?

Listening through moments of static in the image, when re encoded sounded at times like voices. I ran a test with music (below) to see if anything recognisable like a rhythm or melody stood out - it didn’t but it very much sounded like wind.
