This particular pylon is one I have returned to at many stages of my life and I expect to continue that for as long as she stands. Still tagged from when I was 15. Across the way, along the path, you can find the concrete shoes of where another stood a decade or so ago.

A short film to support my thesis on dictating the non- verbal and understanding noise/signal exchange as subjective through the context of electricity pylons as communicators in the British landscape.

The script was a collaborative project with users online pitched to build a bank of words not limited by language or real meaning to describe what is commonly known as an electricity pylon. This bank was then organised into phrases and arranged into a song like (verse -> chorus -> verse -> chorus -> bridge -> chorus) structure. This was then performed to the object itself.

Audio for 'Synonymous Blasphemy' (translated to) ‘Same Sin’ couldn’t reliably be documented onsite. ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement, a post production technique used to ‘fix’ audio, most commonly poor speech), is used exclusively to limit dialogue as a product of digital translation and as a support for a crip camera unable to record sound independently and a 6 minute memory limit.

Detectable via an electromagnetic microphone, speech is specifically recorded through the EM mic pressed against our mother’s hearing aid translating ‘acoustic’ speech to digital ‘noise’. This chain of equipment comes with its own noise interference, it felt important to preserve this and so any and all AV distortion is analogue, no digital manipulation has been used at any point of production.

Intended to be repeatable and intentionally slow and fairly simple, Synonymous Blasphemy ‘Same Sin’ works within a constant exchange, paying acute attention to medium and form- who is listening to who?
